A Sodus Point Spring - April 1886!

From page 6 of the Wayne County Alliance, Sodus, New York, April 21, 1886:

"Not much business is being done as yet in the way of shipping.  Six vessels lie at anchor in the Bay. Active preparations for the Summer campaign have been begun on every side; sailors are busy repairing and painting their vessels, and residences, and Summer-cottages are being put in trim."

Chocolate Sale Starts Thursday!

Here's an announcement from our Friends:

Valentine’s Day celebrates all the caring, sweet things we do or say all year long. And nothing says “I Love You" or even “Thank you” better than chocolate or a special baked treat! The Sodus Community Library’s Valentine Chocolate Sale is a good place to pick up a valentine treat to give to a loved one, or just to show someone your appreciation.
Our annual sale will be held Thursday, February 11th from 10:00 – 7:00 and Friday the 12th from 10:00 – 4:00.  (If the school is closed due to weather, then the library is also closed, and we will hold the sale Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th.)  Each and every treat, whether it be pie, cake, cookies, fudge, muffin candy, cupcakes, snack mix, etc. is wrapped as a gift even if you are simply treating yourself.
This is a fun event that you don’t want to miss, and your support helps the Library.  Baked good donations are gratefully accepted and may be dropped off starting Wednesday, February 10th and at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday the 11th.  We hope to see you at the Library soon, and let us know if you have any questions by calling 315-483-9292.

"Old" News

It's so much fun to browse through our old newspapers!  I found the following news from East Williamson in the August 27, 1897, issue of The Record:

"A group of six young ladies wheeled to Ontario Centre, ate ice cream and returned--and that all on Saturday afternoon."

I wonder what our average mileage is on a Saturday afternoon in 2016!

Local Newspapers Now Searchable

We have exciting news!  You can now click here to access 101 years of our local newspapers, The Wayne County Alliance and The Record.  The papers included are from 1876 to 1977.  They are searchable by topic, name, subject, etc., or you can browse by month and/or year.  You can clip articles of interest, download complete pages, or print what you find.  In my searches I've been able to find wedding, birth, and graduation announcements, obituaries of family members, interesting news articles, plus many "who visited whom" tidbits.  Click the link above and discover some of your family's local history!

Funding for this project was provided by Senator Michael Nozzolio and the Friends of the Sodus Community Library.  We also are grateful to Wilma Young for supporting the digitization of the library's microfilms of The Record

Upcoming Books-Sandwiched-In

This announcement just came in from our Friends group:

"Books Sandwiched In" at the Sodus Community Library is restarting where it left off in the spring, inviting you to enjoy a sandwich (and dessert!) lunch while you hear about informative subject matters in a friendly setting.

The Tuesday, September 15th discussion will be a program by Bruce and Edie Farrington from Sodus Point on the everyday life of families from the 1800's in rural Wayne County.  Bruce is the Sodus Point Historian, and his wife, Edie, shares his love of history.  Edie grew up in the Clyde area, and her brother, Ron Winter, recently acquired seven diaries written by their great-great-grandfather.  He was a Civil War veteran and a farmer NE of Clyde; he traveled to Sodus, the Old Point, and went out rowing and fishing on the Bay, along with other travels.

The luncheon will be at noon (cost is $3.00), and the free presentation will start at 12:30 in the Library's community room.  Stop by at 17 Maple Avenue to sign up at the front desk, or call (315) 483-9292 to reserve your spot.  Seating is limited to 30 for lunch, plus an additional 10 for the program.  We hope to see you there!
