We Love Our Friends!

We have a great group of Friends. Led by Shirley Patchett, Friends members and volunteers baked, priced, set up and sold all kinds of wonderful goodies (and jewelry and coffee table books) at their Holiday Bake Sale, bringing in $925.42 - almost double their previous best! Thank you to Shirley and all her helpers, too numerous to mention here, to Elinor Weldgen who arranged the jewelry display in spite of her recent surgery, and to Martin Dudley for donating two of his handcrafted nautical-themed wreaths. We're grateful for all the time you donate for the benefit of the library. Thank You!

Driveway Change

We will be permanently closing our entrance driveway at 5 p.m. this Sunday, December 11th. Please use the new entrance off of Smith Street, behind the Library Annex at 19 Maple Avenue, after that time. Traffic remains one way, and the current exit will continue to be used.

This winter we'll be plowing snow into the space between the buildings, and early next summer we hope to begin breaking ground there.

Thanks To All Sodus Voters

Thank you to all who voted today, both for and against. We're glad you all cared enough to make ;your voice heard. The final tally, including absentee ballots, was 75 no votes, 165 yes votes. Needless to say, we're excited to be able to take the next steps toward providing the Sodus community with the library service it both requires and deserves.

Library Board Meets Thursday

The Sodus Community Library Board of Trustees' monthly meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, December 8th. Because our Friends of the Library Holiday Bake Sale and the Expansion Project Referendum will both be held in the library that day, the Trustees will be meeting in the library's Annex at 19 Maple Avenue. Board meetings are open to the public.

Choose, Give, Matter

Along with many other local nonprofit organizations, our library will be participating in ROC The Day, an epic one-day giving event which will take place on December 8th. Sponsored by ESL Federal Credit Union and powered by United Way of Greater Rochester, ROC The Day will be the first event of its kind in New York State, and offers an opportunity to make an end-of-year gift to help advance worthwhile endeavors. We hope you will consider giving to this campaign.

Hearing Reminder

We will be holding a public hearing on our expansion project at 7 p.m. this Thursday, December 1st, in the library's meeting room. Please attend if you are interested in learning more or if you have questions concerning the December 8th referendum.

Important Dates

For several months, representatives from the community, the Library's Board of Trustees, and staff have been working on plans to alleviate our currently overcrowded conditions and to provide handicapped accessibility to all areas of our facility. Many of you have stopped by to see the concept plans drawn up by LaBella Associates to deal with these problems. Important dates are:

December 1, 7 p.m. - Public Hearing in the Library's meeting room
December 8, noon to 9 p.m. - Referendum for permission to proceed and to authorize borrowing

Everyone is welcome to attend the Hearing and encouraged to vote on the 8th. If you have any questions concerning the project, please let me know.

Computer Problems Today

We apologize for the inconveniences you're experiencing today while our system is down. Don't worry about being overdue if you return your DVDs today. If we aren't able to check them in before closing today, we will backdate their return tomorrow. You will still be able to check things out today - you just won't receive your printed receipt. Thanks for your patience!

Holiday Closing

The Sodus Community Library will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23rd, and will remain closed Thursday, November 24th, and Friday, November 25th. We will reopen at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 26th. Your OWWL account, our catalog, and OWWL2go are always available.

Friends Meet Tuesday

The monthly meeting of our Friends group will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15th, in the Annex. Come help us finalize plans for the Holiday Bake Sale!

Book Club Meets Next Week

Because the last Thursday of November is Thanksgiving, Book Club will meet at noon on Thursday, November 17th. We'll be discussing Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters, the first title in her popular Amelia Peabody mystery series. I hope you can join us!

Book Sale Starts Thursday

The Friends of the Sodus Community Library are unloading boxes, sorting, and alphabetizing an unprecedented number of books for this year's sale. Opening is at 10 a.m. this Thursday, November 3rd at the Library's annex, 19 Maple Avenue, and continues through Saturday. Be sure to set aside time to stop by - I've seen lots of great titles pass through here!

Early Closing Halloween

The Library will be closing at 5 p.m. on Halloween, Monday, October 31st.

Book Club Meets Thursday

Please plan to join us at noon this Thursday, October 27th, as our Book Club discusses The Madonnas of Leningrad by Debra Dean. This book will be next spring's "If All of Rochester Read the Same Book..." selection, so you'll be able to get a head start on those discussions.

Volunteers Needed

The Friends of the Sodus Community Library are getting ready for their biggest fundraiser of the year, the November Used Book Sale. There are still open time slots for sorting, setup, and selling. Work starts next week, and the sale will run from November 3rd through the 6th. Please contact us if you can help.

Books-Sandwiched-In Tuesday

Call now to reserve your spot for next week's Books-Sandwiched-In. Jean Seymour, our favorite book reviewer, will be discussing Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden. The luncheon starts at noon on Tuesday, October 18th; a donation of $3 covers your sandwich, beverage, and dessert. I hope to see you there!

Join Our Book Club

Our Book Club will meet at noon on Thursday, September 29th, to discuss The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived The Great American Dust Bowl by Timothy Egan. We'll also be selecting our next read. I hope you can join us!

Books-Sandwiched-In

The Friends of the Sodus Community Library will host a Books-Sandwiched-In luncheon at noon on Tuesday, September 20th. The program will feature local author and popular Sun & Record columnist Brooks Tenney discussing his latest book. Reservations are required, so stop by the Library or call us at 483-9292 to reserve your spot.

One World, Many Stories Picnic & Finale Program

I hope you're planning on joining us tomorrow (Thursday, August 17th) for our final day of Summer Reading.

Our picnic starts at 12:30; bring a sandwich, and we'll provide the juice, pretzels, and freezer pops.

Our finale program, featuring folk singer Cathy McGrath*, will start at 1:30. This will be a highly interactive program of favorite traditional singing games and funny songs, and is sure to be enjoyed by the whole family. Cathy calls her music Teakettle Music because "it's the sort of music that's steeped in tradition, brewed at home, and shared among friends." What could be better?

One World, Many Stories, Week 6

Our sixth week of Summer Reading is here. We hope you've had fun and that you're planning to join us to celebrate the last days of One World, Many Stories. Here's what we've scheduled:

There's good news for those of you who download audiobooks and ebooks from OWWL2go - you may now check out up to 4 titles at a time. In addition, you'll now be able to place holds on up to 4 items.

Remember, when a hold becomes available, you have 3 days from the time of the email to check out the title. It's a good idea to have fewer than your maximum number of items out so that you'll be able to download your hold when it becomes available.

I'm glad so many of you are enjoying this service. We're hoping to be able to offer a class on downloadables in the near future. Meanwhile, let me know if you have any questions.
