Celebrate Your Freedom To Read

Starting today, we join libraries all over the country in celebrating our freedom to read and the importance of our First Amendment. Held annually during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual and attempted bannings of books across the United States. Come in and take a look at the books locked up in our display case; they represent just a few of the titles that were challenged in 2007 and 2008.



Chad, Rustle, and Mooch, the Crash Pad puppets, misinterpret the meaning of Banned Books Week, trying to throw some books with objectionable content--including Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, The Joy of Cooking, and the phone book--out of the library, until Herb points out the error of their ways.

What's Next For Book Club?

We're all enjoying the great discussions at our book club! The next time we meet, we'll be discussing Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. This title has also been chosen as the 2010 Writers & Books "If All of Rochester Read the Same Book" selection. Join the fun - plan on joining us at noon on Thursday, October 29th.

Book Club Meets Tomorrow

Reminder: Our book club meets tomorrow (Thursday) at noon to discuss Water for Elephants. Feel free to bring your lunch along. I hope to see you there!

The Big Switch

Be ready for The Big Switch! We're reversing the directions of our driveway starting Monday, September 21st. Our current exit will be our entrance; the current entrance will be your way out. The switch will offer

• Better traffic flow
• Easier access to our book drop
• More efficient use of our parking lot
• Parallel parking along the exit lane

In addition, drivers parallel parking along the exit lane will no longer have to step into snowbanks or bushes when getting out of their cars! And no more frustrating drive around the building because there are no parking spots in the back - or parking on the street when spots are available!

We hope that this new traffic pattern will make your visit to our Library more convenient. As always, we encourage you to drive slowly and carefully around the building.

Books-Sandwiched-In

There are still a few spaces left for Tuesday's Books-Sandwiched-In. A delicious luncheon ($3 covers everything!) will be followed by John Cook speaking on "Local Government ... Or Not?" Reservations are required.

I hope to see you at noon on Tuesday, September 15th. After the luncheon, please join us for the Friends of the Sodus Free Library's monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m.

Library Board Meets Thursday

The monthly meeting of the Sodus Free Library Board of Trustees will be held at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, September 10th. Board meetings are open to the public.

Holiday Closing

The Sodus Free Library will be closed Saturday, September 5th, Sunday, September 6th, and Monday, September 7th for the Labor Day weekend. We'll reopen at noon on Tuesday, September 8th. See you then!

Reminder

Monday, August 31st, is the last day to turn in your completed Bingo sheets and Time Trackers. We'll be drawing for the Family Fun Pack on Wednesday, September 2nd. Good luck!

Library Board Meets Friday

There will be a special meeting of the Sodus Free Library Board of Trustees at 5:15 p.m. this Friday, August 28th. This is an additional meeting, and does not replace the regular monthly meeting, which will be held at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, September 10th. Board meetings are open to the public.

Be Creative @ Your Library Finale

Your whole family is sure to enjoy tomorrow's storytelling performance by Cris Riedel (1:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 20th). Everyone is welcome - you do not have to be a participant in our Summer Reading program.

If you have been a part of our Be Creative @ Your Library program during the last six weeks, you will be able to pick up your reading certificates and your camera-framed pictures plus enter one last weekly drawing.

Wednesday is Game Day

Join us around the game tables at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19th. We have a bunch of board games ready for all ages, and you're also welcome to bring your favorite one along with you. See you there :)

Friends Meeting

The Friends of the Sodus Free Library will meet Tuesday, August 18th, at 1:30 p.m. in the Library's meeting room. We'd love to have some new friends join us.

Tonight is our last best chance to view the Perseid meteor shower this year. If you've never seen this spectacular show, you have to stay up to watch the northeastern sky; if you have seen it in past years, you already know it's a don't-miss event.
