National TV Turnoff Week

Does your family spend every evening in front of the television? National TV Turnoff Week is the perfect time for our families to enjoy other pastimes together: get out a board game, make a craft, go for a walk, play a sport, volunteer, take advantage of this week's activities at school, put together a puzzle, or - my favorite, of course - visit your library!

Holiday Closing

School's Out Movie Day

We'll be showing a movie for the entire family this Wednesday, April 20th, at 3 p.m. No reservations are required. Both the movie and the popcorn are free, and you're welcome to bring your own snacks and beverages.

April Books-Sandwiched-In

Our Friends are treating us to Sandy Hall's presentation "Teachers Teaching Teachers in Haiti" at their next Books-Sandwiched-In at noon on Tuesday, April 19th. Because space is limited, reservations are required. A donation of $3 will cover your lunch. If you have time, we'd love to have you stay for the Friends monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m.

Open House Today

Take time to stop by the Library today, between 4 and 5:30, for the Friends of the Sodus Community Library's Open House. You'll learn about all of the projects our Friends group offers, tour the library, and enjoy some delicious snacks. There are also three tours scheduled of the Annex next door, if you want to learn more about our future expansion. I hope to see you this afternoon.

Library Board Meets Thursday

The monthly meeting of the Sodus Community Library's Board of Trustees will be held at 4:15 p.m. this Thursday, April 14th, in the library's meeting room. Board meetings are open to the public.

What a great program we had Thursday night, thanks to Margaret Potter of the Genesee Land Trust and Purple Martin expert Rick Marx. For more information, check out the Purple Martin Conservation Association and the Nature Society.

Purple Martins Majesty

I hope you're planning on joining us at 7 p.m. this Thursday, April 7th, for Rick Marx's program on attracting and managing Purple Martins. Mr. Marx, a senior environmental engineer with the law firm Nixon Peabody, LLP, will present a PowerPoint presentation and lecture on these unusual birds who stopover in our area twice a year. Birding has been a lifelong passion of Marx's, taking him on bird-watching trips throughout North America, Mexico, Great Britain, Brazil, and Bolivia. We're excited to be able to offer his presentation to our community, and are grateful to the Genesee Land Trust for their sponsorship and to Margaret Potter for her efforts in planning and coordinating the program.

A Celebration of Women Writers

Each March we celebrate Women's History Month. The Online Books Page site has a special collection called A Celebration of Women Writers. Click here to explore; there are some great choices for books you can read online, all free of charge.

Books-Sandwiched-In

The Friends of the Sodus Community Library are hosting their first Books-Sandwiched-In of the year - so it must be Spring :)

Call us (483-9292) to reserve your spot for noon on Tuesday, March 15th. For a $3 donation, you'll be served a delicious luncheon and treated to a presentation on Taking A Tall Ship Through The Canal by Captain Jean Taber. We're all looking forward to a great program.

Following the BSI, the Friends will hold their monthly meeting at 1:30 and their annual meeting and election of officers at 2:30.

Next Book Club Choice

Movie At 3!

Today's Movie Is Postponed

I am disappointed, as I'm sure you will be, that today's movie is going to be postponed. We will be rescheduling the showing soon. Thank you for your patience as we deal with some health issues. We will return to regular hours and activities as soon as possible.

The Sodus Community Library's Board of Trustees will hold their monthly meeting at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, February 10th. Because the Friends' Valentine Chocolate Sale will be underway in our meeting room, the Board will meet upstairs in the Ruth Mills Room. Board meetings are open to the public.

Valentine Chocolate Sale

It's almost time for our Friends' annual Yes - It's Chocolate! Sale. We have all the best candy makers plus cookie, cake, and pie bakers signed up, so you definitely want to make time to visit the Library next week. Although chocolate is the word of the day, I've heard there's a cherry pie being planned, plus several other non-chocolate goodies. Sale hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Thursday, February 10th, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday, February 11th.

Closed on Wednesday

The Sodus Community Library will be closed Wednesday, February 2nd, due to unsafe conditions caused by the winter storm. If you have something due on Wednesday, we will add an extra day to your check-out time; please do not get out to return items until the roads are safe to travel. You can, of course, always access your OWWL account to renew your materials or leave a message on our answering machine, if you prefer.

Time For A Movie

Monday, January 31st, is a Conference Day, so plan on joining us for another School's Out Movie Day. We'll have the popcorn popped and start the showing at 3 p.m.

Freebies For Your eReader

I know that several of you have received eReaders for Christmas (some even purchased their own when Santa failed to deliver). Click on the owl with headphones in the right column to access our downloadable OWWL2go ebooks. You can check out up to three at a time, and new, in-demand titles are being added weekly. If you need help, just stop by and we'll get you started.

Our friends Beth at Geneva Public Library, Lynne at Victor Free Library, and Ellen at Pioneer Library System have compiled a list of some of the additional sites where free ebooks - most out of copyright - are available; you can pick up a copy at our circulation desk.

Holiday Closing

It doesn't seem possible to me, but it really is almost 2011! The Library will be closed Friday, December 31st, and Saturday, January 1st, for the New Years holiday, and will reopen at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 2nd.

Another Successful Sale

Our Friends group met yesterday and it was announced that they sold $522.40 at their Holiday Bake Sale, another all-time record! Thanks to Shirley Patchett and her wonderful crew of bakers, wrappers, and sellers. Thanks, too, for all the buyers who braved the snow to come out and support the Friends. We're grateful to all of you.

Holiday Closing

The Library will be closed Friday, December 24th, through Sunday, December 26th, for the Christmas holiday. We will reopen at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 27th. While we're closed, you'll still be able to access your OWWL account to renew materials and place holds. OWWL2go is also always available for downloading audiobooks and ebooks.

We're Open Today

We're open today, hopefully from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Be aware through these winter months that if the Sodus Central School District is closed due to blizzard conditions, we are also closed. When conditions worsen during a day we're open and the roads become unsafe, we may occasionally close early, for your safety and ours. This happens only rarely. Anytime that you're uncertain about whether or not we're open, just give us a call (483-9292) before you head out to the Library.

Closed Today

The Library will be closed today, December 14th, due to the winter storm. It's too dangerous for you or for us to be out there on the roads, so please stay in where it's safe and warm. No fines will be assessed today, but if you would like to renew anything that you have checked out, you may do so by leaving a message on our phone (483-9292) or by accessing your OWWL account online. If the weather improves, we will reopen at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Bake Sale Coming Soon!

Our Friends are busy gathering ingredients for their favorite recipes, and getting ready to bake all kinds of treats for you to purchase for the holidays. The Bake Sale will be held in the Library's meeting room next Thursday and Friday, December 9th and 10th. Here's a picture of just one of the sale tables from last year's sale. Thanksgiving Holiday Closing

The Library will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 24th, and remain closed Thursday and Friday, November 25th and 26th. We will reopen at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 27th.

Closing does not affect access to your OWWL account, our catalog, or OWWL2go.

Book Sale A Success

Our Friends took in a total of $2,072.77 at last week's book sale - the most ever! Thanks to Shirley Patchett and her wonderful crew for doing such a fantastic job. We had several people come into the library to tell us how well organized the rooms of books were. Thanks to all involved :)

Holiday Closing

Weekend Bag Days

This is a glimpse of the sale room which has been set aside for children's books.

Don't miss the final two days of our sale. With the exception of a few individually priced items, everything that has not been sold will be up for grabs at $2/bag. Sale hours on Saturday are 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.; Sunday hours are 2 until 5 p.m.

Friends Book Sale Underway

We are so pleased to be able to hold our Friends annual used book sale in the Library's new Annex. This photo shows one of the five rooms our Friends have filled with books. You can see Shirley, Elinor, and Sharron making one final check and taking one last deep breath before opening the sale to some very enthusiastic shoppers. While we had a record-breaking first day, there are lots of great titles still available. Books are half-price on Friday, so set aside some time between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to stop by and pick up some bargains.

Personalize Logging Into OWWL

You no longer have to use your library card number to log in to our catalog or your OWWL account. You are now able to replace that number with a username.

Go to http://evergreen.owwl.org

Click on "My Account" and enter your library barcode number and current password, then click on "Login."

In the Account Summary which opened up, click "Change" opposite "Username." Enter the username you want to use (Note: the username is case sensitive).

Click "Submit," then click "OK." You can now login at any time with your new username. You may also change your password in the same manner.
